Penalties from copyright strikes expire after 90 days. Other types of copyright claims do not result in penalties and also do not expire. If you believe a claim is invalid, please dispute it.

It says quite clearly under the heading that "all contents are in the public domain" yet the answers refer to copyright strikes, copyright schools, court proceedings, penalties and the like. Can it be that these experts don't actually know what the words "in the public domain" mean? Well, for their information, here is the definition, as spelled out if you google those very words: "The phrase “public domain” refers to works that have effectively become public property and are no longer protected by copyright law. This occurs when the copyright in a work of art expires. ... When works enter the public domain." In other words, all those references to copyright strikes, copyright schools etc. are totally irrelevant!

However Kerrison YT does not make judgements on copyright matters and saying something is in the public domain does not mean it is given the differences in copyright law globally it would depend on where they are and where they copyright holder is. For example some copyrights are life plus 75 which means it remains in copyright for 75 years after the death of the copyright owner. In some places all material released by people in that country is considered public domain if it was published before a certain date. This means that even though it may be public domain in one country it could still be under copyright protection in another.

As the person got a copyright issued, whether it was content ID or a takedown and therefore our advice needs to fit their situation. In both cases the argument would be public domain. In the claim situation they get to decide if it is valid or not, but you can file a dispute more than once which can cause them to issue a takedown,, this is what earns a strike. As long as it doesn't take them to three then it is a good thing as then it becomes a legal matter. This means a counter notification can be filed using public domain as the argument. The claimant then has as I said three weeks to us normal people to prove to YT that they have either started legal proceedings against the uploader or that the counter notification itself is legally invalid and so it is as if it was never filed.

Can the Copyright School situation please be clarified? If someone has received a single copyright strike, and it expires after 90 days, does one then automatically get a Copyright School panel to complete? And if it's not completed correctly with the right answers, then what happens? Is the uploader's channel taken down? Thanks for any enlightened reply!

As I understand it you need to complete copyright school for the strike to expire. My knowledge in this area is only theoretical.

Dermacrosis ... I've just checked "Resolve a Copyright Strike" and it says "If it's your first copyright strike, you'll need to complete Copyright School." The important word is "first," as it means that if you get another one, in my case several years later, then you don't need to go through it all again. This is what puzzled me because when the 90 days were up a few days ago, the screen merely said "Your video was removed ... Your channel is no longer affected." The lack of any reference to Copyright School is now explained, as there must be a note in the system to say that I'd already completed it successfully all those years ago. Nice to learn something new!
