YouTube has been a platform for people over 13 (or the applicable age in your country), and we’ve always recommended that parents co-watch with their kids if they choose to watch YouTube. In 2015, we created the YouTube Kids app for children to explore independently. Since then, we’ve heard from families that tweens and teens have different needs, which weren’t being fully met by our products. 

In the coming months, we’ll launch a supervised experience on YouTube -- a new choice for parents to allow their older children to access YouTube through a supervised account. This means your content may be made available in this experience 

We’ll start with an early beta to gather feedback, as we continue to build and improve the experience. You can find the full details in the blog post here and read more on what this means for creators below.

Parents will have the option to choose from the 3 different content settings options on YouTube (Explore, Explore More, and Most of YouTube). We’ll use a mix of user input, machine learning and human review to determine which videos are included in each content setting. More on these content settings here.

You’ll be eligible to reach a new audience on YouTube (viewers under 13 - or the applicable age in their country). The exact impact on your channel is hard to predict, and we anticipate impact (if any) will be gradual as we build out supervised experiences over time.

Since this will be a brand new option for families (and will launch as a beta), we don’t anticipate significant changes to your channel's performance in the early stages.

While we won't serve personalized ads or ads in certain categories to supervised YouTube accounts, contextual advertising (which is based on the type of content watched, not the user) will still be served.

Supervised accounts on YouTube will give parents the choice to allow their kids access to a managed version of regular YouTube. We’re building this new supervised experience for parents who think their older kids are ready to use YouTube, but we still recommend YouTube Kids for younger kids to watch independently and have a more contained viewing experience.
